Yeners Paste - Features
Yeners Pastillage is produced in mid-strength to provide an easy-to-knead, smooth and pliable paste allowing you to quickly start working with it. It can be rolled very thinly and it keeps it remains flexible so you can model the desired shape within a reasonable time.
It contains no fat so water based gels or pre-dissolved powder colours can be mixed with it easily. Rolled or shaped pastillage provides a perfect surface for brush painting, airbrushing, wet sponge shading, scratch painting and more.
When time is of the essence, and a quicker drying is necessary, adding icing sugar will make a firmer paste. The same method applies when extra strength is required for larger pieces. Keep in mind that more icing sugar requires quicker workmanship!
Adding and kneading in a small amount of water makes the pastilage softer. This can be helpful if you want to slow down the drying time in order to have more time to work. Continuing this process will make the pastillage usable for gap filling, smudging, palleting, texturing, gluing and even piping.
Once open, keep the remaining portion in the provided zip lock bag and also an airtight container for more extended storage.
Use colourless oil Spray for rolling small pieces and time-consuming modelling. Use starch for rolling larger pieces.
Clean your blade or knife with a dampened hand towel every few cuts to remove sugar residue which affects the ability to make a clean-cut.
When you are cutting multiple pieces from rolled pastillage, protect the surface with oil spray and a plastic sheet to avoid crust.
Place the cut or modelled pieces on corrugated cardboard to speed up the drying time and turn them over from time to time.
Clean sandpaper can be used on completely dried pastillage to achieve bevelled edges and to remove any unwanted imperfections.
Use a small amount of shortening (Trex, Flora White or Cookeen) on the tabletop to avoid a slippery surface when rolling and shaping small parts.
Use water with a small brush or spray bottle to glue soft-to-soft, or soft-to-hard pieces. Use egg white for a stronger hold. Use Royal icing for joining hard-to-hard parts.
Use a minimum amount of white compound chocolate for instantly joining parts together with no support. Visible chocolate can be hidden with some royal icing which can then be smoothed with the water brush.
Use royal icing or wet pastillage for welding or filling gaps which should not be visible.
Pastillage can be placed in a microwave for a few seconds to soften quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
My pieces did not dry enough. Why?
Your room is probably very humid. Switch on air-conditioning or use an electric heater on low fan force blowing directly on pastillage from a distance.
Why is my pastillage crumbling?
You have lost too much water content due to multiple heating/kneading and reusing. Just add a spoon of water or two and knead again.
Why are there are hard parts in the paste?
You may have kept the paste on the table too long. Due to this, some may have dried too much and you could have mixed the dry parts back into the paste.
Why can’t I cut the paste cleanly?
Make sure your knife is sharp and cleaned after every few cuts. Cleaned craft knives or a “Stanley” type knife usually do a good job at cutting pastillage.
Why doesn’t the paste have a clean surface after rolling or shaping?
Your hands or your roller may have sugar residue. You must ensure you clean your hands or your roller regularly to remove any sugar residue. Too much starch or icing sugar could have been dusted on the paste.
The edge of the paste is cracking when I roll it out?
You may be working too slowly causing the paste to dry slightly. Knead the piece well then roll straight away without pausing.
